5. Hank Aaron (1934-present day) – “Hammerin’ Hank”

Henry Louis Hank Aaron began his career in 1954 playing for the Milwaukee Braves in the position of right fielder. Throughout his career he took part in 23 Major League Baseball seasons, achieving a batting average of .305 with 3,771 hits and performing 755 home runs. Hank Aaron also has 2,297 RBIs which is still a MLB record. His teams include the Milwaukee Braves, the Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers for a short period. Worth mentioning is the fact that in 1957 he was awarded the MVP title and during the same year his team the Milwaukee Braves won the World Series.

6. Lou Gehrig (1903-1941) – “Iron Horse”

Although he deceased quite early from a debilitating illness named Lateral Sclerosis, which gradually diminished his ability to bat, Lou Gehrig will always be remembered as the first MLB basemen to play throughout 17 consecutive seasons in the New York Yankees. Within his glory period, Gehrig achieved an impressive .340 batting average, 2,721 hits and 493 home runs, not to mention the 1,995 RBIs. Gehrig received the MVP award twice in his career, in ’27 and ’36.

7. Christy Mathewson (1880-1925) – “The Big Six”

Christy Mathewson played baseball in a less exciting period of this sport, also referred to as the Dead Ball Era. As a pitcher for the New York Giants, the team with which he debuted in 1900, Mathewson scored 2,507 strikeouts and 79 shutouts. He had a brief period playing for the Cincinnati Reds in 1916, the team where he made his last appearance. A win loss ratio of 373 to 188, an earned run average of 2.13 and the fact that he was an inaugural member of the first 5 to be elected in the Baseball Hall of Fame recommend Christy Mathewson for a deserving 7 place in our list.

8. Ted Williams (1918-2002) – “The Thumper”

Player and manager, winner of the MVP award 2 times and setting a .551% on base that took an additional 61 years to surpass, Ted Williams is another legendary baseball player. Part of the Boston Red Sox, Washington Senators and Texas Rangers, Williams’ statistics show an impressive .344 batting average, 521 home runs, 2,654 hits and 1839 RBIs.

9. Rogers Hornsby (1896-1963) – “The Rajah”

Starting as infielder for the St. Louis Cardinals (in 1915), Rogers Hornsby won the MVP and the Triple Crown awards two times each. A batting average of .358 with 2,930 successful hits, 301 home runs and 1,583 RBIs mark his impressive career and most sports critics regard him as one of the worlds’ most proficient batters of all times.

10. Stan Musial (1920-present day) – “Stan the Man”

Stan Musial made the All-Star team selection 24 times and played for the St. Louis Cardinals for his entire career. Recording a .331 batting average with 3,630 actual hits, 475 home runs and 1,951 RBIs, Musial was awarded the MVP title 3 times, won the World Series champion title 3 times and the NL batting title 7 times.

A game which has its origins back to 1344 in France, baseball came to the United States in 1850 but actually only began to capture the attention of the public at the turn of the century. Since that glorious moment, baseball gradually made its way into the favorite national sports, only to become the national pastime later on.

Along this road, numerous players have proven their excellence in the Major League of Baseball and the following article aims to list what we consider the top 10 player list of all times, based on their achievements, statistics and popularity. While all classifications of this type have a certain level of bias, this one takes aims to consider all the important aspects that make up the portrait of the perfect baseball player.

1. Babe Ruth (1895-1948) – “The Sultan of Swat”

Irrespective of the disputes between sports critics and fans, Babe Ruth is and will probably be for a long time representing the very best display of skill and dedication in baseball. With a batting average of .342, 2873 throughout his entire career as well as an impressive 714 home runs carried out, Babe Ruth is definitely a tough act to follow. He played in teams like the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees and the Boston Braves, setting still undefeated MLB records like the .690 percentage of slugging throughout his career and 1.164 OPS.

2. Willie Mays Jr. (1931-present day) – “Say Hey Kid”

Debuting in the Major League of Baseball on the 25th of May, 1951 he is considered by most baseball enthusiasts as the rightful owner of the second place in the top 10 best baseball players of all time. Willie Mays Jr. has retired back in 1973 but his career is far from forgotten. Mays’ batting average is .302 and during the 1,903 games he batted, Willie Mays managed to perform 3,283 hits. At the same time, he also carried out 660 successful home runs, boosting the San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets on the first places of the MLB. Among his greatest achievements, the 4 home runs he managed in a single game back in 1961 is probably the most impressive.

3. Ty Cobb (1886-1961) – “Georgia Peach”

Born in Narrows, Georgia, this player currently holds the record for the highest batting average of all times, meaning .367. He debuted in the MLB with the Detroit Tigers in 1905 and made his last appearance in 1928. Ty Cobb’s statistics include 4,191 successful hits, 117 home runs and 1938 RBI (runs batted in). Cobb played for the Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics and he even managed the former team between ‘21 and ’26. An impressive yet less known fact is that Ty Cobb had a singular game when he batted at less than .320.

4. Walter Johnson (1887-1946) – “Big Train or Barney”

Walter Johnson debuted in 1907 with the Washington Senators and quickly earned his reputation as one of the world’s best power pitchers. Even in the absence of precision measuring instruments, baseball observers from that period estimated that the speed of ball thrown by Johnson easily exceeded 145 kilometers per hour. He recorded 3,508 strikeouts and 110 shutouts and his earned run average is 2.17. He retired in 1927 with a 417-270 win-loss ratio.

Sachin Tendulkar is the cricketer who has repeatedly broken his own records to prove his own ability in the world of cricket. Probably the best cricket of the world has been a wonder to the most sports analysts. He has delivered the world of cricket with a new era of cricket, a new dimension to the gentleman’s game. Whether it is the test cricket or it is one day international cricket Sachin has always remained the highest scorer as a batsman. Sachin Tendulkar is the one and only one player to score a double century in an ODI match.

Sachin was born to a mediocre Rajput Saraswat Brahmin tribe family. Ramesh Tendulkar, Sachin’s father is a Marathi novelist and his mother Rajni is an employee in an insurance business. Sachin Tendulkar was named after his father’s favorite music director Sachin Dev Burman. Sachin always showed a keen interest in cricket right from his childhood. While he tried for the bowling his coach Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee, he suggested Sachin to concentrate on batting. After that he has never looked behind.

Sachin started his international cricket career at the age of 14 in the Wankhade Stadium against Zimbabwe. He has shown a terrific partnership right from his school days with Vinod Kambli who later joined the Indian Cricket Team. In the year 2002 according to Wisden (a cricket reference book) considered Sachin to be in the place next to Sir Donald Bradman in the records of Test cricket and just behind Viv Richards in the ODI crickets. He has been a part of the World Cup being a cricketer of India for six times and he has also been a part of the World Cup winning team of India in the year 2011. In the year 2003 he was recognized to be the player of the tournament in the ICC World Cup. He has received several trophies’ among which the most prestigious is the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for being the cricketer of the year by the highest organization- ICC. He has made the record of creating a history of 100 centuries in the international field of cricket. In fact he is the only cricketer to have a 50 centuries in test cricket within his own sack. He became the first cricketer to score 15000 run in the test cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar married Anjali who is a pediatrician by her profession and is a proud father of Sara (his 15 years old daughter) and Arjun ( his 13 years old son). Arjun has however followed his father’s path and is a probable name for the training camp organized by Mumbai Cricket Association.

The Master Blaster has received the Padma Vibhushan award which is considered to be the second most prestigious award for an Indian Civilian. However he has already received a nomination for Bharat Ratna award. It is the most prestigious award for any Indian Citizen and the reforms are done in order to offer the award to Sachin Tendulkar.

Michael Phelps, an American swimmer, born in 1985 made history by being the first swimmer ever to win 8 gold medals in 2008 during the Olympic Games held in Beijing, taking over the record of 7 medals by Mark Spitz during the historical Olympic Games in Munich 1972. Michael Phelps started swimming when he was 7 years old; partly to follow his sisters and partly to get rid of excess energy he seems to have. When he was 10, he swam to his first American record for his age group.

In 2000, he is the youngest participant in the American aquatic team that is participating in the Olympic Games in Sydney. Although he did not win a medal, he gets media attention by finishing 5th in the butterfly finals. In 2002, when Michael was 17 years old, he swims himself into the picture by breaking the world record for 400m individual medley during the Pan Pacific Championships. During this Championships event, he wins 3 gold and 2 silver medals.

In 2003 during the world Aquatic Championships in Barcelona (Spain), Michael Phelps breaks 5 world records and wins 4 gold medals and 2 silvers. By now, the world is amazed by this young American swimmer and the first rumors about doping use arose, very much to the irritation of Michael. During the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Michael nearly breaks Mark Spitz’s Olympic record of 7 gold swimming medals, just losing the 200m Freestyle finals by finishing 3rd after Ian Thorpe (Australia) and Pieter van den Hoogenband (the Netherlands), at that moment the world’s strongest Freestyle swimmers. Although he does not swim in the 4×100 medley finals, he still receives a golden medal as he did swim in the pre rounds.

In 2005 during the world championships in Montreal, Canada, he makes it to the finals for the 400m Freestyle, but finishing disappointingly in the 18th place. Michael revenges himself later that day during the 4x100m Freestyle, swimming himself to gold. In total at that swimming meet, he wins 5 gold and 1 silver medals. During the Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria in 2006 Phelps swims 3 world records (200 meter butterfly, 200 meter individual medley and 4×100 freestyle relay), the first world records in 2 years and does he increase his medals intake with 5 gold and 3 silver.

In 2007, during the world championships in Melbourne, Australia, Michael Phelps sends a warning to the swimming world by winning ‘only’ 7 gold medals equaling the 1972 Olympic record and breaking no less than 5 world records. The first one he breaks is the 200m Freestyle record, for six titles held by Ian Thorpe. The world at this point had the following question buzzing: Is this miracle man able to do the impossible and make history during the Olympics of 2008?

In Beijing during the 2008 Olympic Games when Michael is only 23, all eyes are focused on him. The expectations are high. He shows his skills off by breaking an Olympic record in the preliminary heats of the 400m individual medley and by winning the final by breaking the world record with a whopping 2 seconds. The tone is set. The opponents know that Michael is in the best form of his life. Michael shows his supremacy by breaking record after record and winning a total of 8 gold medals, finally breaking Mark Spitz’s 1972 record and in the process, breaking 7 world records as well as 1 Olympic record.

After all these amazing achievements, Michael decides to take back gas. During the 2009 World championships, he decides to only swim in 3 individual events and 3 relays. In this event, he breaks his own 100 and 200 meter butterfly world records as well as 2 relay records. For the first time in 4 years, he loses a 200m Freestyle title to the German Paul Biedermann who smashes Phelps’ world record.

2010 is a bit disappointing for Michael Phelps. Although he did win 5 gold medals during the Pan Pacific Championships, he did not break any records. Michael has indicated that he wants to swim at the Olympics in 2012 but he will also retire after the games at the age of 27! Scientists who have researched Michael’s amazing body think that the combination of super long arms, that can be used in the same way akin to pedals and his relatively short legs, might have given him more force as well as the excess energy as a result of ADHD are at the base of his spectacular results.

On 17 January 1942, a little boy was born in Louisville, Kentucky. Nothing special one can say, but if you knew he received the name Cassius Marcellus Clay, a bell might ring for you. In 1964, he changed his name to Muhammad Ali after converting to Islam. It was a white policeman and boxing coach, Mr. Martin, who brought Cassius in contact with the boxing sport but Cassius decided to train with Fred Stoner, an African-American who was working as a boxing trainer at the local community center. Throughout his amateur career, Fred Stoner remained Cassius’ trainer and coach and thanks to this man, Cassius not only won the Kentucky Golden Gloves six times, but also the National Gloves two times. And if that was not enough, he also won a national title from the American Athletic Union.

Cassius was so good that he was asked to represent the US during the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, where he won a golden medal in the Light Heavyweight category. The story went that he threw the medal into the Ohio River out of frustration for not being served in a ‘whites only’ restaurant. It is unknown whether this story is true, but the lost medal was replaced in Atlanta where he lit the fire for the 1996 Olympic Games.

After his success during the Olympic Games, Cassius made the decision to become a professional boxer and won his first match in October 1960. Cassius was known for his unconventional fights and for keeping his hands low. With light-footedness and swiftness, he avoided the punches meant to go for his face. From 1960 till 1963, Cassius wins 19 matches, of which 15 via knockouts, defeating well known professional American boxers.

In February 1964, Cassius Clay was seen with Malcolm X, a minister of the controversial African American Muslim organization ‘The Nation of Islam’, a religious group that fought for equal rights of the African American. This nearly jeopardized his match against Sonny Liston. Answering questions from journalists on how he would approach his opponent, Cassius Clay mentioned the historical words, “I will float like a butterfly, but sting like a bee” and to his opponent, “Your hands cannot hit what your eyes cannot see”. Cassius used his speed and height, making it impossible for Liston to come strongly into the match. Although unconfirmed, Liston tried to cheat Cassius by adding a substance on his boxing gloves leaving Cassius blinded for 2 rounds. Sweat and water, however, cleaned his eyes and in round 7, Liston did not come back into the ring, simulating a shoulder injury. At the age of 22, Cassius Clay becomes a heavy weight champion, the youngest boxer ever to do so. It was only after this match that Cassius, who was raised Baptist, announced that he decided to join the Nation of Islam and confirmed his conversion to Islam. It is then that the name of Cassius is changed to Muhammad Ali.

From then, the reigning Ali had to defend his title many times and started his world tours fighting against boxers from Europe. Early 1967, he had a dirty fight against Ernie Terrell, who had made Muhammad Ali cross by calling him Clay. In the ring Ali kept screaming at Terrell “What is my name Uncle Tom, what is my name!”. Terrell lost the game through a knockout, leaving Terrell totally mortified. In spring 1967, Muhammad Ali lost his heavy weight title as he was convicted for felony. He refused to fight the war in Vietnam on religious beliefs and the fact is that he did not see a necessity to fight people who did not hate him. In that same period, Muhammad Ali saw his boxing license suspended indefinitely. Of course, he appealed the court’s decision. It would take 4 years before he successfully defended his case before the Supreme Court.

In 1970 while still on appeal, he was allowed to box again. This was the start of a phenomenal comeback. Shortly after his fight against Jerry Quarry which only lasted 3 rounds, it was ruled by the New York State Supreme Court that he was unlawfully denied a boxing license. This paved the way to the fight of the century against Joe Frazier, who like Muhammad Ali, had not been defeated. The two heavyweights met each other on March 8, 1971 in Madison Square Garden. Millions of spectators saw Muhammad Ali losing his first professional match in the 15th round. In January 1974, there was the nontitle rematch. Frazier had in the meantime lost his title to George Foreman. Muhammad Ali won the fight in 12 rounds.

In October 1974 during the “Rumble of Jungle”, Muhammad Ali regains his heavyweight title by defeating George Foreman in Kinshasa then Zaire, nowadays Congo. Hardly anyone gave Ali a chance. But Ali would not have been Ali if he did not come with a surprise. He indicated to the press that he would dance to stay away from the hard hits of Foreman, yet he started straight for the man and took George Foreman by surprise. Ali hit Foreman 9 times in the first round and his tactics to wear out Foreman succeeded by knocking him out in the 8th round.

Muhammad Ali retired from the boxing scene after winning for the third time, the WBA version of the heavyweight title by defeating Leon Spinks. In 1984, Muhammad Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease but this did not withhold him to stay in the limelight. He even met Saddam Hussein of Iraq in a plea to release the American hostages in the embassy in Iran. Ali was married 4 times and has got 7 daughters and 2 sons. In 1975, Ali wrote his autobiography ‘The Greatest’. In the early 2000’s, his second book saw the light with the help of his daughter.

Muhammad Ali is still alive, but his illness makes him homebound nowadays.

Definitely a star after the recent Australian Open winning and 16th slam title.

A Public Figure beyond Tennis

Apart from his extraordinary success on the tennis court, Roger Federer is a legend of sport far beyond anything that tennis has ever seen. His story can be said to rival that of the great Williams sisters. He was not born in a poor country or to poor parents or to a marginalized community. However he has been a transformative figure in the whole of tennis as well sports in general. The records are heavily in his favor, having just won his sixteenth singles grand slam cup at the expense of the ridiculously overhyped Andy Murray. His ardent fans point to the fact that apart from being a remarkable tennis player, Roger is also an extraordinary human being whose life is an inspiration to everyone. This article is a meager attempt to describe the towering background and achievement of such a great figure. It is neither definitive nor exhaustive but it is a great start to exploring the life and times of the great that is Roger Federer. The tennis has been explored to death thus my decision to incorporate some of the other aspects of his rich life in order to create some balance.

Birth and Education

Roger Federer was born in Switzerland in a small town called Binningen that is based not too far off Basel. His father shared an identical name with Roger and his mother was one Lynette Durant who originated in South Africa. This means that Roger Federer is both Swiss and South African but is normally associated with Switzerland even when he is entering tennis tournaments. Having grown up in Switzerland, a country with a rich heritage or multi lingual usage, he acquired an affinity for most of the major European languages including German, French and English. He is able to speak the localized dialects as well.
It is said that he was raised as a catholic and regularly associates himself with the religion on an informal basis. Although he was required to undertake military service as a Swiss citizen, Roger Federer was in the end excused since he has a long standing back problem. One has to wonder how a great tennis player in one of the most rigorous activities possible can be excused from military service while continuing to play and win great tournaments. Perhaps it was thought that it would not be conducive to ruin his career just for the sake of a military that really does not have too much conflict in a neutral country. Either way the facts indicate that Roger Federer would have been willing to undertake his obligations as necessary.

The Roger Federer Family

Recently Roger Federer married Mirka Vavrinec. She had been his long term girlfriend and personal manager throughout his tennis career. Mirka is a competent tennis player and she has been listed on the Women’s Tennis Association. They met at the Olympic Games in Sidney around the year two thousand when they were both competing for their respective nations. Despite her quite respectable career, Mirka was forced to retire in the year two thousand two due to a foot related injury. Her main role in Roger Federer’s life was to act as companion privately and as a public relations manager in public.
As was expected for a long time, they were eventually married in the year two thousand and nine in a private ceremony. Despite the almost obsessive media interest, the wedding details were never publicly proclaimed apart from a brief media statement to the effect that they were both very happy. At the time Mirka was heavily pregnant and she did in fact give birth to twins on the twenty third day of July. They decided to call their children Myla Rose and Charlene Riva respectively.
Although it was thought the marriage and consequent birth of his children would hinder Roger’s concentration on his tennis career, he has since continued to win grand slams and is currently the top ranked player in the world as well as the defending singles champion for Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Roger Federer has recently talked about the changing priorities in his life but has also restated his firm commitment to the sport as well as alluding to the fact that he is still enjoying himself. This would indicate that barring a major injury, retirement is not yet on the cards.

Roger the Charity Organizer

Roger Federer is undoubtedly one of the wealthiest sportsmen ever and he seems to be keenly aware of his position of privilege. It is not surprising that he is often involved in various charities and philanthropic initiatives. The cynics might say that as a major celebrity, Roger will know the value of holding a starving African child in front of the world’s media. It may have worked for Bono and Madonna but the consensus seems to be that Roger’s generosity is genuine and he really wants to help people who may be in a much worse situation than he could ever possibly encounter.
The Roger Federer foundation came into existence in the year two thousand and three. The main objective and vision that Roger had in mind was to set up a facility that would improve the lives of people who did not have as much as the rich sports people that he normally interacted with. He was also interested in developing sports beyond the elite world that most tennis players are accustomed to. Although the interests are typical of a tennis player, it is also important to recognize that Roger Federer has been trying to give back to communities which he is not particularly affiliated to. It shows a maturity that has enabled him to become one of the most respected sportsmen that has ever lived.
The examples of Roger Federer’s charitable work are numerous. Their variety and scope speak of the great man’s reach to parts of the world for which tennis is but a distant elite occupation. At the United States Open Championships in the year two thousand and five, Roger decided to auction his tennis racquet with the proceeds going to the victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. The cynic in me would say that he had no choice given the situation and the country he was playing in. However the pragmatist in me realizes that there were hundreds and even thousands of people who could have helped but chose not to do so. Therefore we have to give Roger praise for hearing the call when it came.
In the context of his charity work, it is not surprising that Roger Federer was appointed a Goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). It is easy to be skeptical and note that the Brangelina international brand has been here before. However it must be recognized that this was also in recognition of the man’s work and his ability to mobilize people across the world for the purpose of good causes.
Tennis players travel a great deal but Roger Federer has also found the time to visit some of the most deprived placed in the world in an effort to raise awareness and also to mobilize charitable contributions. He visited his part time homeland of South Africa as well as the poor people of Tamil Nadu who were afflicted by tragedy when an earthquake caused terrible damage. Most recently we have seen Roger Federer teaming up with fellow tennis players to contribute to the charitable efforts for Haiti in the wake of the recent disaster.

Truly Great People Have Scars

Roger Federer is not perfect, although many of his fans have cited his tennis as some of the best that they have ever seen on any court. When he won the career grand slam and overtook the impressive records of Pete Sampras his greatness was confirmed. However even he is prone to occasional wobbles. I felt a slight irritation with the whole Wimbledon shoes and stars saga. One almost felt that a tennis player owned a tournament. Venus Williams had a similarly impressive record there but she did not go to great lengths to lord it over the tournament. Yes her sister is a diva in her own right but Roger should really have known better.
The tears and drama when Rafael Nadal beat him were at best pathetic and at worst petulant. I was particularly irritated that he seemed to want to take away attention from the Champion just because he was not getting the titles he wanted. The bitter diatribes when he seemed to be fading hinted at a man who was pleasant only because he had never been in a position of losing regularly. When Federer was down, he could almost reach the levels of ungraciousness that we have seen from Serena Williams (another great champion who can be hideous when beaten).

A Balanced View

I must admit that I never really liked Roger Federer in the beginning. There was something too perfect about him and I was irked that the media had decided to go on a love fest whenever he was playing. I hated him for winning again and again with almost effortless ease. However when I saw him struggling with younger players and being written off by the same media which yesterday praised him to the heavens, I was moved and began to understand that he is truly a great tennis player. And to think that a jumped up tennis minion like Andy Murray is touted to take his place is an insult beyond belief.

Lance Armstrong is a world class American athlete who won several world cycling championships and also a famous cancer survivor. This remarkable athlete won the highly prestigious Tour de France seven times straight in a row which made him the most successful athlete in the world of cycling. Who is Lance Armstrong and how did he developed such amazing skills to excel both professionally as an athlete and in his personal life as a successful cancer survivor?

This is his story.

Lance Armstrong grew up in a family where money is scarce but his mother saved up enough to buy him a Schwinn Mag Scrambler when he was a kid. He was an active precocious child and was curious to know about everything and wanted to participate in anything that interest him. The young Armstrong was very athletic from the start and he spent most of his time cycling, playing basketball and swimming in the evening. His talent began to show during his teen years and during his senior year in high school, he was qualified to train with the Olympic team and then travel to Russia to participate in his first ever international tournament.

Soon after his graduation from high school in 1989, he was accepted into the U.S. National Cycling team and worked along with the famous coach Chris Carmichael. He learned from Carmichael that it takes more than physical endurance to win a race. It takes strategy and some killer tactics to be the champion. Sure enough, in 1991, Lance Armstrong became the winner of the U.S. National Amateur Championship.
He then rode in the 1992 Olympics game and finished 14th. Armstrong became a professional athlete right after this event. He won the second place in a World Cup race in Zurich, Switzerland and this marks a new beginning in Lance Armstrong’s career. He met a man by the name of Jim Ochowicz, who later signed him up with the Motorola team.

Armstrong’s career took flight in 1993 and he went on to win ten titles. He was the 1993 World Champion and the US Pro Champion.
In 1996, he won the second Tour DuPont tournament and achieved several major victories. He signed a two million dollar contract with the French Cycling team. This success enables him to purchase a brand new Porsche and a gorgeous home in Austin, Texas. However, he was unable to participate in the Tour DuPont because of his ill health.

Right after his 25th birthday, Armstrong began to cough up blood. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer, which had spread mercilessly to his abdomen, lymph nodes and the lungs. He was immediately put under intensive medical care and had an operation to remove one of his testicles the day after the diagnosis. Armstrong was given a cocktail of drugs to help save is life and control the spread of the cancerous cells.

Armstrong went on to recover from his battle against cancer and proceeded to win several major competitions and serves as an inspiration for the rest of us. In July 2009, he announced plans to return to the Tour de France 2010 with Radio Shack as his team’s main sponsor.

Oct. 2012 Update

Lance Armstrong loses face and medals

Lance Armstrong, the poster boy for the fight against cancer has been allegedly using drugs all throughout his career and duping the authorities in what seems to be a very organized and studied method of doping. USADA has banned Armstrong and has stripped the cancer survivor of all his medals. Though he claims he is innocent, he is not willing to fight the ban. This comes across as surprising for many people question that if the man knows he is innocent then why not fight the ban and save his face?

“This is my body, and I can do whatever I want to it. I can push it, study it, tweak it, and listen to it. Everybody wants to know what I am on. What am I on? I am on my bike busting my ass six hours a day; what are you on?” this is what Lance Armstrong told a reporter when asked about his miraculous victory. The man now has to bite his tongue as USADA has collected strong evidence showing him as the face of institutionalized doping in cycling. This evidence includes financial payments, documentary evidence, laboratory tests and emails. These prove that Lance Armstrong was in possession of performance enhancing drugs and used them regularly to enhance his performance and even distributed them to his partners and team mates who claim that they were forced into by him.

What has been most hurtful is the fact that Lance Armstrong was the face of fighting terminal illness and was a role model for millions who suffer from cancer. He was also the face of Livestrong and though the brand will live on, it was Armstrong who gave it the recognition it receives till date. It is alleged that Armstrong forced athletes to take performance enhancing drugs and taught them how to evade detection and ensure that it remains as secret. But little did he realize that this scam involved several doctors, clients and athletes and hence could not remain a secret forever? He must have known that sooner or later the truth would have been out for everyone to see and the fact that he continued after that is what has let down several millions of fans.

Though one can never justify his actions, we cannot take away the fact from him that he did fight cancer and make a comeback. That is and will remain inspirational. It is the way that he conducted himself after that which remains a disgrace. Now only time will tell whether he will be remembered for the doping allegations or for being the face of fighting cancer.

Andre Agassi might be one of the greatest tennis players the world had ever seen, but his personal life out of the tennis courts has attracted much attention as well. Known for his bad boy image, Agassi was aggressive both on courts and in his personal life. It seems that this retired tennis superstar always knew what he wanted and what’s best for him. A history maker, he is the only American tennis player who won eight Grand Slam singles tournament in a single row. He’s fiercely passionate and he’s an inspiration to the new aspiring players. The life story of Andre Agassi never fails to capture our attention.

Agassi was born to the Iranian Emmanuel Mike Aghassian and his wife, Elizabeth in 1970 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Agassi turned professional at the tender age of 16 and never looked back since then. His first ever tournament was held in La Quinta, California where he beat John Austin, 6–4, 6–2 in the first round but lost to Mats Wilander in the second, 6–1, 6-1. He went on to win 60 singles titles, 8 Grand slams titles and an Olympic Gold Medal in 1996. He is the first male player in history to win all four Grand Slam titles on three different paying surfaces, clay, grass and the hard courts.

Agassi is famous for this unique and unorthodox methods of playing and is regarded as one of the most fascinating and charismatic players of this time. He is responsible for reviving back the popularity of tennis in the 1990s.
Agassi is one determined player who would attempt to find end points as quickly as possible and he achieves this by inducing a weak return that is delivered through a series of deep hard shots, and uses the extreme angles to tire out his opponent. His amazing serves provides the sense of anticipation and excitement that draws fans and admirers to his game as loyal spectators. He is famous for his tough slice serve within the deuce service box which often ends his opponents off the court and then followed swiftly by another shot at the opposite corner.

In his personal life, Agassi was married to Brooke Shields but the marriage was short-live and ended in 1999. He met the former Grand Slam Champion, Steffi Graf in the same year and they were married two years later. He now lives with Graff and their son Jaden Gil, and daughter, Jaz Elle in Las Vegas area. They also own several vacation homes.

Agassi has been active in many charitable organizations and founded his own, the Andre Agassi Charitable Association in 1994, that is targeted to help disadvantaged young people in Las Vegas achieve their dreams. For his humanitarian efforts, Andre Agassi was awarded the ATP Arthur Ashe Humanitarian award in 1995. He authored his own biography in 2009 and created a controversy with his confession about using the drug Crystal meth in 1997 which he had lied to tennis official about it.

David Robert Joseph Beckham was born at Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone, London. The son of a kitchen fitter and a hairdresser mom, his father and mother were avid fans of Manchester united from the beginning. Young Beckham was first exposed to the game of football when he was a child. The twice runner up for the FIFA World first encounter with Manchester United in 985 at the age of 11 when he became the champion of the Bobby Charlton Soccer skills tournament. The winning prize includes a brief two weeks training period with Terry Venables’ at the Nou Camp. His talents shone and eventually led to his signing up with the Manchester United team.

Beckham joined Manchester on 8 July 1991 as a young trainee which fulfilled this own dreams and his parents’ to see him enter the ranks of the players they used to admire from far. He made his first debut a year later at the age of 17. He had immediate success along with the teammates such as Ryan Giggs, and Paul Scholes. This dynamic team won the coveted FA Youth Cup back in1992.

Beckham went on to help United win the Premiership title six times and the FA cup as well. In September 1994 Beckham made a full appearance against Port vale in the prestigious League Cup. His first goal for the team was scored during a match against Galatasaray in the Champions League. The team won the match with a knockout 4-0 but it wasn’t good enough to make it to the finals.

Beckham married his sweetheart, Victoria Adams of the Spice Girls fame in 1999, with their 4 month old son Brooklyn in attendance. Between the marriage and the baby and Beckham’ celebrity status in the entertainment industry, his focus and priorities seemed to shift form being a mere team player to a glamorous celebrity which puts him into opposite sides with the team’s famous coach Alex Ferguson. The misunderstandings catapulted into a more serious state and Beckham moved on to sign up with Real Madrid with a contract fee of £25million.

Beckham left Manchester United for real Madrid and stayed there for four seasons. During the final season, he helped Real Madrid clinched the La Liga title which is Beckham’s only trophy with this new club. In January of 2007, Beckham announced his intention to leave Real Madrid to join the Los Angeles Galaxy for a five year period. His exit was dramatic and during his final match with Real, he helped the team clinched the La Liga championship.

Beckham’s newest contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy, turned him into the footballer with the highest salary ever in the history of MLA. His first debut with the team in July in a friendly match against Chelsea and he scored his first goal for the team in the semi-finals of the SuperLiga championship.
Today, the football superstar resides in the exclusive Beverly Hills, California with his wife Victoria and their 3 sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz.
